THIS WEEK IN THE CAPE LEAGUE
(28 June – 4 July 2009)

Coca Cola Pitcher and Player of the Week

COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:

Bryan Morgado, Bourne, LHP

Bourne lefty Bryan Morgado (Tennessee) has been named Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week, joining fellow Brave Eric Cantrell (George Washington), who won the award the first week of the season. Morgado has disposed of his opponents with almost surgical efficiency this week, recording 16 strikeouts against only two walks in seven innings.

In Morgado's first appearance of the week, a 2-1 victory over Cotuit, the southpaw struck out an unreal 13 of the 17 batters he faced over a shutout five innings performance. He would also come in to pitch two shutout innings of relief in a 9-1 win over Wareham later in the week, notching three strikeouts without surrendering a run.

Morgado is currently a junior at the University of Tennessee. A former Freshman All-American, the lefty went 4-2 in 2009, recording an impressive 75 strikeouts in 52.1 innings pitched. Morgado was selected in the third round of the 2009 MLB draft by the Chicago White Sox

COCA COLA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Lyle Allen, Brewster, 1B

Brewster slugger Lyle Allen (Georgia) is the first Whitecap to be named Coca-Cola Player of the Week. Allen earned the honor by batting an astounding .636 over five games this week. His on-base percentage stands at an unreal .750, while Allen's two doubles and one home run have pushed his slugging percentage to 1.091. The Georgia product put on a show in a 9-8 victory over Chatham on June 29, going 2 for 2 with three walks, two hits, two runs batted in, and a home run in the third inning.

Allen is a sophomore at the University of Georgia. The 6'3 lefty hit .255 with five homers this year for the Bulldogs, while shifting between both of the corner outfield spots. Allen has shown his fielding versatility over and over again in college, highlighted by a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage during his freshman year.
